He received his doctorate in Theology in 1996 and his Habilitation in Fundamental Theology in 2009, both from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.
He dedicated thirty years to academic life as a professor and researcher at the Pontifical University of Mexico (1995-2000), the Ibero-American University of Mexico City (2001-2021) and Boston College (2021-2025).
He was a member of the Board of Directors of Concilium, international journal of theology (2019-2023) and the Editorial Board (2015-2023).
His work proposes a philosophical theology in which the phenomenology of Subjectivity, mimetic theory and decolonial thought converge in dialogue with the social movements of the Epistemic South.
He has authored eight books, 30 collective works, and 60 articles in specialized journals. Among his books, a trilogy on the idea of revelation stands out: Deus Liberans. Christian Revelation in Dialogue with Modernity. The Foundational Elements of Theological Aesthetics (Éditions Universitaires, Fribourg, 1996); God hiddenDesire, Memory, and Eschatological Imagination. An Essay in Postmodern Fundamental Theology (Du Cerf, Paris, 2011); and God ineffabilisA Postmodern Theology of End-Time Revelation (Herder, Barcelona, 2015).
His most recent book, Resurrection as a Messianic Insurrection: Mourning, Memory, and Hope from the Perspective of Survivors (Alios Ventos, Mexico and United Kingdom, 2024), is the first of a trilogy about the idea of tradition.
His theological thinking is inspired by the accompaniment of social movements resisting various types of violence, especially indigenous peoples, groups of family members searching for the disappeared, queer groups, and support networks for people in forced migration.
Together with a collective of intellectuals from seven countries, he has coordinated several international and intercultural meetings of social movements with academics and artists, including Resist. Violence, resistance, and spirituality (Mexico City, 2019); Re-exists! The spirit crossing peripheries (Guadalajara, 2023) and Re-exists. Intercultural encounter. The Spirit connecting peripheries. at ITESO in Guadalajara in September 2025.
